Last Week on Instagram

instagram1

Happy Monday everyone! How was everyone’s weekend? It was so nice being able to spend an entire weekend back in our own apartment and getting back into our own routines of blogging and playing video games. I thought I would share a few snapshots from my Instagram that are currently making me happy!

282 Smiles Below Sea Level

deathvalley1DSC_3412

Although my Death Valley trip was far from my visions of “glamping”, I survived. The temperature at night dropped down into the low 40s but I made sure to pack the essentials which included: thermal leggings, wool gloves, pocket warmers, an air mattress (imperative) and a zero degree sleeping bag. The temperature during the day was around 75 degrees, which made it great for hiking and exploring. We played in and around ancient rock formations, rolled down sand dunes (actually, just one did), and walked on the salt flats of Badwater Basin, which happens to be the lowest point in North America at a whopping 282 feet below sea level. However, I am kind of glad to be back in my own home Not smelling of dust and campfire.

Here We Go Again!

desertroadtrip

This weekend officially marks the 4th (and last) weekend straight where Morgan and I have rented out our apartment through Airbnb. This means we've had to find clever (and sometimes desperate) things to do and places to stay. Truth be told, I'm kind of having a nervous breakdown and I can't wait to spend next weekend at home doing absolutely nothing. But in the meantime, a bunch of my friends and I are going camping in Death Valley this weekend. If I survive the 41 degree weather and bee's, I'll be sure to some deserty photos!

Passport Smashport

passport2

My passport expires one month before my trip to the Philippines. Just my luck, right? Luckily I realized this early enough to renew it with plenty of time to spare. You basically send in your old passport, the renewal fee, an application, and a new photo. And, after 10 years of cringing at my passport photo every time I would even think of taking an International trip, I thought it time to take my own. This way, I could take several options and choose the best one. After doing some research on the Department of State's website, it turns out there's a laundry list of photo requirements and regulations when taking your passport photo such as: a neutral expression, an all-white background, no shadows, proper exposure, taken straight on, etc. Morgan and I took these a couple days ago...which one do you think I sent in?

Traveling Light

packing light

As many of you know, I’m planning a trip to the Philippines to visit my sister while she's out there on her Fullbright scholarship. She’s been to the Philippines on several different occasions and advised that I pack extremely light. I’ll be there for two weeks and I’m already stressing about what to bring and what not to bring. I want to get a new travel backpack, cross trainers, a more durable (and water resistant) watch, and possibly a more portable digital camera that still shoots like an SLR. I’m leaving in a little over 4 months but I want to start thinking about these things now so I don’t end up maxing out my credit card buying all my necessities the very last minute. Any seasoned travelers out there have any packing pointers?

The Neon Boneyard

Do you ever wonder what happens to all those flashy neon signs in Las Vegas when the casinos they belong to go under? Hopefully, end up at the Neon Boneyard, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of these historical pieces. You can actually schedule a guided tour (two weeks in advance if you can) where you learn about vintage signage and the era from which they were forged. What makes this place even more rad is that they are hoping to restore the signs and offer tours at night to view them in their original glory!

Happy Friday the 13th everyone! For the long weekend, Morgan and I are headed to the high desert - Las Vegas to be exact. We have plans to visit the Neon Boneyard and zip line down Freemont Street. We also got these insane tickets called Power Passes that allow you entry to a bunch of Vegas attractions. It should be an adrenaline pumped weekend for sure! What are your plans for the long weekend?

My mom recently accepted a position at the brand spanking new Palm Springs hotel, The Saguaro. It's part of the Joie de Vivre line of hotels and is set to open in February. I love the pink and orange hues that were chosen to capture the natural beauty of the Southwest. The loveliness of this hotel just scream girls weekend and I can't wait to check it out for myself!

Pink Dromedaries

Do you like how my last blog post was about how I wanted to post more often in 2012 and it's been almost a week! Any who, last weekend, I took Morgan to the Living Desert. I grew up taking field trips to this small desert zoo that's located in Palm Desert, California. We fed the giraffes, blushed at the sand cats, and splurged on smashed pennies. Also, I've been waiting for the right trip to wear my new favorite dress! It's this ridiculous camel print dress by Charlotte Taylor that Morgan bought me for Christmas. You like?

A Look Back At 2011

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to try to blog more often. That doesn’t sound too hard, right? Well…truth be told, it kind of is if you’re not a professional blogger or stay at home mom. The hardest thing I’ve learned about blogging in the past couple years is trying to find the time and material to post daily. When you get home at 7 and go to bed at 10, that doesn’t leave you a lot of time. I can’t tell you how often I daydream about being freelance and spending my entire day coordinating events, outfits, and craft projects for Winkeland. My hopes in 2012 is to become better at planning my blog posts accordingly to meet my New Year’s resolution and to create a better online presence through other social media outlets.

I also want thank everyone who continues to visit and support my blog...even though you might get sick of my news feed on Facebook.

Confetti Eggs DIY

To ring in the New Year, I decided that I wanted to make my own confetti eggs. They were super easy to make and smashing them on loved ones at midnight ended up being more rewarding than icing on a cake. I followed the tutorial on Oh Happy Day but stuffed the little eggies with metallic foil confetti instead. I also threw in some red hearts and gold sequins for a little more sparkle. Just make sure you keep your spirits (in this case, your Moscow Mule) away from the action or they might end up looking like this....
